A fully supported postdoctoral position is available in the Coler Translational Research Group to characterize immune response of novel vaccines for infectious diseases including schistosomiasis. Previous experience in human immunology - functional antibody-based and cellular immunoassays, including multiparametric flow cytometry - is required.  The postdoctoral fellow will develop expertise in the assessment of vaccine mediated immune responses and systems immunology. A key aspect will include combining information from multiple levels such as genes, proteins and whole cells to gain a clear, multi-scale understanding of vaccine function during infection and disease. The fellowship is designed to prepare the post-doctoral level trainee for a career in a non-profit biotechnology- and multidisciplinary setting. Excellent organizational and communication skills are required.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute hypothesis-driven research projects that advance the development of vaccine delivery platforms and generate effective vaccines for infectious diseases
  • Assessment of immunological endpoints in vaccine clinical trials including assay development and validation
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in high-profile peer reviewed journals
  • Presents research at internal/external scientific meetings
  • Participate in grant writing
  • Communicate with research management on a regular basis
  • Records procedures, outcomes and observations in a lab notebook format following established guidelines
  • Utilizes established mathematical and scientific techniques, including statistical analyses, to compile and critically analyze and interpret data
  • Contributes to or leads maintenance of the sample repository including sample tracking procedures
  • Supervision of research assistant(s) and/or associate(s)


Required Education/Experience:
-Doctorate degree (PhD/DVM/MD) in specialty area from an accredited university training program
- Experience using basic research techniques of specialty area


  • A strong track record of publication
  • Experience and skills in immunology and/or cellular biology assays
  • Experience working with small animal models of infectious diseases
  • Experience working under Biosafety Level 2 or 3 (BL2/BL3) conditions
  • Willingness and ability to work under BL3 conditions with appropriate training
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Must be self-motivated, organized and be able to work within a team
  • Cellular immunology and T- and B-cell based assays (e.g., >10-color flow cytometry panels, B cell ELISpot (ASC), T cell cytokine ELISpot, ADCC, cytokine multiplex assays.
