Our investigators are involved in hundreds of projects that cover every phase of research, from studying how diseases work to improving investigational therapies. They have pioneered groundbreaking cystic fibrosis treatments and cutting-edge cancer therapies that help a child's immune system defeat cancer, and made other major contributions to pediatric medicine.
Researchers work in close collaboration with one another, their colleagues at partner institutions including the University of Washington and Fred Hutch and our healthcare providers at Seattle Children's Hospital, one of U.S. News & World Report’s top children's hospitals. Our Pediatric Clinical Research Center is an ambulatory outpatient clinic dedicated to providing care for research participants and their families in the context of a research study. It is part of the Research Integration Hub and as such, spans studies across multiple departments, disease, illnesses, and illnesses within the contact of the conduct of a clinical research study. The Pediatric Clinical Research Center is a vital part of research support to study teams, research participants and their families as our nursing staff are critical to making more treatment options available to our patients as a result of the research that occurs there.
The Clinical Research Nurse within functions as a collaborator with/to research teams (that may consist of Investigators, Clinical Research Coordinators, Data Managers, Regulatory Coordinators, and other Nursing Staff). Clinical responsibilities throughout the conduct of a research study include: providing nursing care to participants and families, monitoring toxicities, assessing clinical response, and communicating research-related information to participants, families, and other members of the research team.

- Reviews standard research orders.
- Assists with the assessment of participant eligibility for inclusion in research protocols (pre-screening, screening, and enrollment).
- Performs participant assessments, administers study investigational products, and provides nursing support to perform diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical procedures.
- Identifies and communicates process improvements relative to safety monitoring.
- Maintains communications (both written and verbal) on a regular schedule with the Investigator, study coordinators, and/or the assigned contact.
As an integral member of the Health Care Team, the RN functions within the Scope of Practice as defined by the State, the ANA Scope and Standards for Pediatric Nursing Practice, and adheres to Seattle Children’s policies/procedures and guidelines of care. Responsible for providing safe, family centered patient care. Using the Nursing Care Process, the RN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care in a collaborative method with the patient and patient’s family, significant others, and members of the health care team. May be required to provide supervision and delegation of tasks to Nurse Technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Medical Assistants, Certified Nursing Assistants, and others as defined by the State Administrative Code. Assists in meeting Seattle Children’s strategic goals by incorporating the initiatives to support the strategic plans into the daily work, i.e. Continuous Performance Improvement (CPI), ART, etc.
In accordance with House Bill 1155 (effective January 1, 2020), the following areas have clinical unpredictable needs and as a result will have a call obligation within their nursing positions: Apheresis, Cardiac Cath Lab, Dialysis, ECMO, Home Care Services, Imaging Services (including GI Procedures), Perioperative Services, and Transplant Coordinators.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Current Washington State RN License, or other current state license that the RN is required to work in.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers is required for all positions. Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) will be accepted in lieu of BLS for Healthcare Providers. ACLS will not be accepted as a substitute to the requirements listed above. Employees are responsible for any costs (including time away from work) associated with obtaining PALS or PEARS certification if it is not a requirement of the position.
